FLIC LOWE

Flic started to make pots as a law student and continued to take classes with the internationally renowned potter Joanna Constantinidis while she was working and bringing up her children. Later after several years as a CAB employment lawyer she went back to college to study for her City and Guilds Diploma in Ceramics

In 2008 Flic moved to Norfolk but it was only in 2013 that she really returned to making pots.

Flic works in both porcelain and stoneware using an electric kiln. She is fascinated by how the internal form dictates the external and the way the clay reacts on the wheel and to the hand.  A pot may not be in perfect symmetry, but according to the Japanese idea of wabi-sabi, it may still be beautiful.

The Norfolk sky, the sea, the marsh all inform the decoration of her pots which are often glazed inside with her own glazes and then coloured on the outside with a variety of oxides.

KATE LOWE

Kate Lowe is an abstract landscape painter who trained at Wimbledon School of Art and Bristol UWE in the late 1990s. She has led a very peripatetic life being married to an army officer but she remains fixated by the marsh and its ever changing landscapes. These influences draw her home to Burnham Norton to paint. She likes to get up early to experience the sun rises or to go out late to catch the sunsets of the intense skies she loves to portray.

She works intuitively with bright warm colours in acrylics and oils, trying to capture that special relationship between the big skies and flat marshes of the coast in north Norfolk and is particularly interested in Scolt Head Island and the walk towards it on the Cockle Path. Kate tends to make en plain air sketches to capture the fleeting moods and colours of the marsh; the feeling of a bright blue day, a threatening sky or a resplendent sunrise and the rise and fall of the tide. These sketches are then worked up into bigger abstract works in her studio.

Her energetic love of colour is infectious and she builds up her pictures intuitively moving through many layers of paint to achieve her rich and exciting work. Barbara Rae is a big influence.

Kate has shown in galleries in the UK and Europe and has clients worldwide.
